John 2:1-11
The Epiphany season began yesterday, with the celebration of the story of the Magi, their visit and gifts given to the infant Jesus. Today follows immediately with a reading from John’s Gospel that tells the story of Jesus’ first miracle – his first showing, as it were, a glimpse into who he is, and what he teaches. Epiphany means a manifestation, a showing, a revelation - in this case, of Jesus, the Christ, and his life among us.
The story we read is full of celebration, as weddings usually are. There is a gathering of people, no doubt food, perhaps the requisite speeches, and definitely wine – lots and lots of wine. And, in spite of what usually happens with wine and its consumption, the wine at this party just gets better and better! Jesus, it seems, plays a crucial role in this event. And, behind the production of copious amounts of wine, I believe, is a deeper truth about Jesus’ ministry and message. Life in the community who follow Jesus, can be one that gets better and better, with an overflowing of love, acceptance, and meaning. May this story of the wedding, and turning water into wine, help us to see the rich potential of a faith in one who cares for us, and for all people. This was “the first of his signs, in Cana of Galilee.” There are many more to come – stay tuned!
