Matthew 2.13–18
In this passage the birth of Jesus appears to have political significance according to the Gospel of Matthew. Herod fears that his political and social power would be threatened with the birth of Jesus. He therefore hatched a plan designed to find and kill this child before any future threat could materialize. Herod’s plans were thwarted when Joseph and Mary escaped into Egypt, a land outside Herod’s jurisdiction. Clearly according to the author of Matthew Jesus was a threat to the reigning social order of the day. This reading may prompt us to consider what are the political implications for our relationship to the current power structures if we claim to be inspired by the example of Jesus’ life and works?
