Psalm 26
Listen to the words of author Nan C. Merill: “O Loving Presence, I cherish your dwelling place, my heart; O, that I might radiate Love Divine.” Despite it being the end my academic term, I feel as busy as ever, between finishing assignments and assisting students in studying for their first-year exams. I love the activity; the feeling of involvement with so many wonderful things is a great source of joy, and makes education meaningful. But I also long for moments of stillness where there is nothing to do but be in the moment.
When I read Nan Merill’s translation of Psalm 26, I touch upon a moment of stillness. I invite God into my heart, and God creates a dwelling place. This invitation means I must step back from the complexities and busyness of every day and take time to reflect on all the good things that I experience. To be in such a focused frame of mind allows God the opportunity to enter in and dwell, whereupon God can radiate Love Divine. In those moments of stillness God opens my eyes to the world around me: the gratitude for the good experiences I have, and the injustices that others suffer. Love Divine is a jab to see the wrongs. And Love Divine is a will to correct them.
O God, I cherish your dwelling place, because you open my eyes to the world.
