1 Thessalonians 5:1-11
Several of our recent readings as well as ones read on Sunday have focused, not unsurprisingly since we are now in Advent, on the expected return of Jesus, the Second Coming. A common theme has been the call to readiness. Again here, the epistle writer emphasizes that this readiness is an everyday attitude and behaviour since, as he puts it, “the day of the Master’s coming can’t be posted on our calendars. He won’t call ahead and make an appointment any more than a burglar would.” (The Message, 5: 2) He goes on to warn us about being complacent, too sure of ourselves, to sure of our material security - as if that indicates spiritual security!
From this warning, he then moves to almost the opposite - saying that there is really no need for this warning or reminding. This is because we are “not in the dark” and so can’t “be taken off guard.” (4) We are children of light, living under wide open skies, knowing where we stand (5) and assured of God’s love. We are called to not be sleepwalkers! We are to live, truly LIVE. I love how this translation puts it: “God didn’t set us up for an angry rejection but for salvation by our Master, Jesus Christ.” (9) We are told to encourage each other (literally to put heart into each other) so that we shall all be together in life, “no one left out, no one left behind.” (11)
At this time of our year, when darkness grows each day as the days shorten, I am encouraged as I drive and see the Christmas lights on houses and trees. They really gladden my heart. They remind me of the opening of the gospel of John: What came into existence was Life, and the Life was Light to live by. The Life-Light blazed out of the darkness; and the darkness could not put it out.” (John 1: 4-5) Whether or not those who put up the lights think of them as a message from God makes no difference: God speaks through all - the question is, am I listening?
Let’s encourage each other, recognizing the Light within our hearts, sharing in Life, no one left out.
Blessings
