Today we remember David, the patron saint of the Welsh people. Following the victory of the Angles, Saxons, and Jutes in the 5th century, some Celtic Christians withdrew into Wales where they held fast to Christianity. David (Dewi in Welsh) served as an effective leader - both as an Abbott and a Bishop - in the early 6th century; he was particularly known for his compassion for the poor and the sick.
We would do well to meditate with the following prayer for St. David's Day from "For All the Saints: Prayers and Readings for Saints' Days:
Everlasting God,
who stored in the hearts of your people
a fragrant memory of your servant David,
grant us wisdom in the care of your Church
and zeal in the proclamation of your gospel,
that we may show forth your abiding love
in a dark and anxious world;
through Jesus Christ our Lord,
who is alive and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit,
one God, now and for ever.
Amen.
Who are the people in your life who are "fragrant memories"?
How might you care for the people of the Church today?
In what ways do you show forth God's abiding love in the darkness and anxiety of our days?
