Luke 1:1-4
Today is the feast day of “St. Luke the Evangelist.” The writer of the third gospel, Luke is also known to be a physician and companion of Paul (see Colossians 4:14).These first verses of Luke’s gospel demonstrate the scientific approach of the writer. He states that he carefully investigated everything and laid it out in an orderly manner. The reader can know that this writing is evidence-based so can receive it with certainty.
In the collect for today, found in the Book of Common Prayer, Luke is called “Physician of the soul.” In his gospel Luke stresses that Jesus has the power to heal both soul and body. He introduces Jesus’ ministry in Luke 4: 14 - 21 by having him identify with the one spoken of by the prophet Isaiah, the one who proclaims freedom to the captives and oppressed as well as healing of physical malaises. As we open up the Gospel according to Luke, we can look forward to hearing the witness of the healing grace of Jesus for all sorts and conditions of people. It tells how Jesus sets us free from our sufferings. Luke presents to us a trustworthy person to whom to come for healing of body, mind and spirit.
What condition or bondage would you like to bring to Jesus for healing? Is there a physical condition which weighs you down? Maybe it is fear, anxiety, hurt or loneliness which is oppressing you?
For a deeper reflection on this healing ministry of Jesus please join us at the Church of St. John the Evangelist in Kitchener tomorrow morning at 8 am and 10 am.
