Jeremiah 23:1-8
Shepherd imagery, like that which we find in this passage, is common in both the Old and New Testaments. As most of us have little direct connection to sheep or shepherding, it might take some intentional effort for this shepherd metaphor to resonate with us.
When we speak of sheep today, it is often in a derogatory way denoting people who do not think for themselves. Take a moment to think more seriously about the positive aspects of this image of sheep guided by a shepherd. It certainly challenges some of our inherited values of celebrity, individuality, and self-determination. We are members of a flock. We have each other and our common shepherd.
